R.I.P. 1951 to 2011

SYD KITCHEN sadly passed away in Durban, South Africa on 22 March 2011 after a short battle with cancer. He leaves behind his widow, Germaine and his two daughters Jasmine and Sev.

Since the 70′s, guitarist/singer/songfighter SYD KITCHEN had remained an innovative, active, non-compromising part of the South African musical landscape. A highly acclaimed teacher, thinker and published poet,  he performed extensively at Festivals and clubs throughout South Africa, both solo and with various combinations.

Before his death, he had released several critically acclaimed albums; all born of an eclectic, curious spirit unfazed by market-place considerations or the wishes of others.

A biographical study of Syd’s life recently had it’s world premiere at the Sneddon Theatre in South Africa. Receiving a 5-star revue by the Cape Argus, Fool in a Bubble is a poignant story of about this legendary Afro Saxon musician’s life and times growing up apartheid South Africa.

This eclecticism and freedom of spirit saw his musical journey traverse the KITCHEN BROTHERS, through EQUINOX, HARRY WAS A SNAKE, THE UTENSILS, THE FLYING SOMBREROS, to his collaborations in AMAKOOL, the AQUARIAN QUARTET (with Steve Newman, Greg Georgiades and Tony Cox) and BAFO BAFO (with Madala Kunene).
